Title
Digital geologic map, petrography and U-Pb geochronology of the Río Santiago Sh…
Abstract

The map presents a detailed geological cartography, petrographic descriptions, and new zircon U-Pb ages of the region surrounding the Rio Santiago Shear Zone, southern Sierra Madre Occidental, providing temporal constraints to its tectonic evolution. The stratigraphy is based on lithostratigraphic units, supported by new U-Pb ages and field observations, and previous U-Pb, Ar-Ar, and K-Ar geochronologic data and maps from the literature.

Purpose

The work was made to establish the stratigraphy of the region surrounding the Rio Santiago and to constraint its tectonic evolution. The mapped area is located in the boundary between the Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. From a tectonic point of view, this region is of particular interest since it includes a polydeformed belt produced by the relative motion between the Jalisco Block and the SMO, here defined as the “Santiago River Shear Zone” (RSSZ)

Data Quality

Compiled from our fieldwork and published and unpublished geologic maps as indicated in the article accompanying this map.

Supplemental Information

The map is a compilation of field observations made by the authors and others. This allows to users to obtain the updated information of the mapped area. Interactive information allows to users to view photomicrographies of the textural variations in the volcanic and pyroclastic rocks, which commonly is just mentioned in a general way in regional studies. Furthermore, it shows the complex pattern of faulting in a brittle shear zone.
